EARLY ACCESS · WINDOWS · STEAM
Midwinter Fan Remaster is in Early Access. It is playable and winnable end to end, and it is still being built. Things will break. When they do, the fastest way to get them fixed is a report with the details below.

Steam: Community discussions
One person reads both. Steam discussions get the fastest answer; email is best for crash logs and save files.
REPORTING A BUG
What to include so it can actually be fixed
- What you were doing — which character, where on the island, on foot or in a vehicle, day and time in-game if you know it.
- What happened vs. what you expected.
- Art mode — Retro or Modern.
- Your PC — Windows version, GPU, and your monitor resolution / aspect ratio (ultrawide especially).
- The log file — see below. Attach it or paste the last 50 lines.
- A save that reproduces it, if you have one — see below.
Screenshots help. A short video helps more.
Where the log file is
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Midwinter\Saved\Logs\Midwinter.log
Paste that path into the Windows Explorer address bar and press Enter. The newest log is Midwinter.log; older runs are kept alongside it with timestamps. After a crash, Windows may also leave a folder under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Midwinter\Saved\Crashes\ — zip the whole folder if it exists.
Where my saves are
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Midwinter\Saved\SaveGames\
There are 10 manual save slots plus a rolling ring of 5 autosaves, written every time you synchronise. The LOAD screen shows the autosave tiles so you can step back if a manual save goes wrong. Back the folder up before big updates if you care about a campaign.
PLAYING
How do I switch between Retro and Modern art?
You choose RETRO (the original 1989 pixel art) or MODERN on the loading screen when you start a new game. You can change it later at any time from GAME OPTIONS inside the game — same world, same save, just a different look.
The game isn't explaining anything. Is that a bug?
Probably not. The original was famous for it. If you picked the Authentic learning curve, tutorials are off by design. Turn them on in GAME OPTIONS, or run the Arctic Survival School from the main menu — twenty scored drills on a separate slice of the island that never touch your saved game. The in-game Frostopedia covers everything else.
Controller support?
Not yet. Mouse and keyboard are required. A Steam Input layout is on the list but is not in the build.
Steam Deck? UNVERIFIED
The game has not been tested on Steam Deck and has no Deck rating. It is a Windows build; it will most likely run under Proton, but there is no controller layout, so you would be on the touchpads or a mouse and keyboard. Reports from Deck owners are very welcome — email or the discussions board.
Ultrawide monitor? KNOWN ISSUE
21:9 and wider are not yet supported. The HUD pillarboxes correctly, but the field of view and the tutorial guide arrows are tuned for 16:9 / 16:10 and may sit in the wrong place at wider aspects. Run windowed at 16:9 for now. If you play on an ultrawide, please send a screenshot — it is the fastest way to get this fixed.
Mac or Linux?
Windows only for now. Linux desktop users can try it under Proton with the same caveats as Steam Deck.
